Understanding Your Cat’s Body Language

Cats communicate constantly, mostly without sound. Reading their body language helps you know when to approach and when to give space.

The tail

A tail held upright usually signals a friendly greeting. A puffed or rapidly lashing tail suggests fear or irritation.

Ears and eyes

Forward ears show interest; flattened ears signal fear or anger. A slow blink is often a sign of relaxation and trust, and you can return it.

Respecting signals

If your cat turns away, freezes or twitches its skin while being stroked, pause. Letting them choose contact makes them more likely to seek it out.
