Bringing Home a New Puppy: The First Two Weeks

The first two weeks with a new puppy set the tone for years to come. Everything is new: the smells, the sounds, the people and the routine. Your job is to make that newness feel safe and predictable.

Prepare before the puppy arrives

Set up a quiet resting area with a crate or pen, a soft bed, water and a few chew toys. Puppy-proof the rooms they will use by lifting cables, shoes and anything small enough to swallow.

Build a simple routine

Feed at the same times each day, take your puppy outside after every meal, nap and play session, and praise them warmly when they go in the right place. Short, regular sleep periods matter as much as play.

Socialize gently

Introduce new people, surfaces and everyday sounds a little at a time, always at a distance your puppy is comfortable with. Ask your vet when it is safe to meet other dogs and visit public places, based on the vaccination schedule.

Book a first vet visit

A checkup in the first week lets your vet confirm your puppy is healthy, plan vaccinations and parasite prevention, and answer questions about diet and growth.
