Positive Reinforcement: Training That Builds Trust

Positive reinforcement means adding something your animal likes, such as a treat, praise or play, right after a behavior you want to see again.

Timing matters

Reward within a second or two so your pet connects the reward with the action. A marker word like "yes" can bridge the gap.

Keep sessions short

Several five-minute sessions a day work better than one long one. End on a success.

Manage instead of punish

Prevent unwanted behavior by managing the environment, and teach an alternative. Punishment can create fear and damage trust.
