Helping Dogs and Cats Live Together

A peaceful multi-species home is very achievable, but first impressions matter.

Start with scent

Keep the animals in separate areas at first and swap bedding so they can get used to each other's smell.

Controlled meetings

Introduce them through a baby gate or with the dog on a lead. Reward calm behavior from both, and keep early meetings brief.

Give the cat an escape route

Make sure your cat always has high places and dog-free zones to retreat to. Feeding areas and litter boxes should be out of the dog's reach.
